I am currently working on a series of large paintings based on events and people I see in the city's main square on my way to work.
Over the past few years, I have noticed an increase in the number of people using this civic space for various reasons: demonstrations, staged events, commemorations and also to relax. I am interested in how groups of people interact and use this space but also those on the margins: the spectators and bystanders.
Often there are events and protests occurring and, at times, their exact purpose is unknown to me. Sometimes I see something about to begin or I arrive at the aftermath of something else. For me, this lends a heightened atmosphere or strangeness to the everyday nature of the square. It is this feeling I attempt to convey in my work, that people and places can be familiar yet full of mystery.
The paintings are constructions, not painted from a photograph of actual events or individuals. I am restaging something already seen that had unknown significance for me. I use my own source material to piece an image together as if recovering a memory. These paintings are recollections of sights and occurrences which held some poignancy or ambiguity.
